Vegas Trip
Our weekend trip to Vegas was all we hoped it would be. The team was split into two squads and each had a good showing. I was most pleased with the rapid growth of confidence our freshmen displayed on both the "A" and "B" squads. Our opponents were solid WCLL programs who know how to capitalize on your mistakes. We we managed to notch a combined six wins to a single loss for the trip.

I was also very impressed by the self discipline and sportsmanship displayed by almost every opponent. It's great to be coaching against other coaches who are emphasising the all aspects of the competitve experience.

While we are still 0-0 for the 2006 season, the opportunity to play spirited competition in a fatiguing environment gave us a great chance to see what our team is made of. If we stay focused on our weight training and running programs the next few months, we should have a competitve team in the spring.

BYU Scrimmage
The Cougars had a little delay getting out of Happy Valley but when they arrived they were in fine form. We had some highlights and some not so highlights but all in all we were pleased with our pace of play and agressiveness on GB's. We still need to learn the discipline to play the body and not the stick on defense. Jeremy showed he is ready for his final season in the cage. Our freshman keepers also showed great poise in their first experience against the class of the USLIA. Final talley 13-8 for the boys in blue.

We experimented with the NCAA's proposed rule changes that eliminate the 20 second count (defensive end) and 10 second count in the offensive end. In their place the new rule allows a 30 second time period once you gain possession to:
A. Get the ball into the offensive area inside the restraining line (top of the offensive box).
B. Get all of the substitutions completed. Once the 30 seconds expire, you are not allowed to do any live-ball subs.

The other part of the new rule proposal that prooved to be less than enjoyable to abide by was the rule that says "once the ball is in the offensive box, you can not bring it out" This essentially takes the rule that used to apply to the leading team in the last two minutes of the game and applies it to both teams during the entire game.

We do not believe this rule will survive the testing period and we have decided to not use it in any of our remaining scrimmages this fall.

A great UVSC squad comes to play Friday at 4:00 PM.

Red / White Scrimmage
A great day with a close game and OUTSTANDING officiating. The parents and fans recieved their first glimpse of the season ahead as the White team surged early and late to score a one goal victory in the intersquad show down. Destin and James hosted a fine barbeque after the game. Next up...Tribal West LC, Saturday 24 September at 10:00 AM on Stillwell field.

Vegas Trip
The Team will be traveling to Las Vegas in October to participate in the annual Best of the West tournament Oct 21 and 22 at UNLV. We will take the entire active roster (less Red Shirts) and will get a schedule that allows us to field a Varsity and Freshman team. All players will dress and be on the sidelines for the Varsity contests, but we will make the "Freshman team" 100 % rookies. Some freshman may find playing time in six games that weekend.

The Varsity will play Friday night in a regulation contest against Cal Poly (7:00 PM ). On Saturday the Varsity will get three "running clock" contests while the Freshman team will be scheduled for 2 or 3 running clock contests. The schedule is not finalized but we expect the Varsity squad to match up with top notch "A" teams from the WCLL like Cal Berkeley, LMU, AZ and ASU while the Baby Utes will play "B" conference foes like UNLV, UCSD and USC. I expect the final schedule to be posted after the deadline for fee submission. Check out the UNLV lacrosse website after October 10th to get the match-ups. www.unlvlacrosse.com

All games will be held on the intramural fields of UNLV just off of Paradise Ave. Admission is free for spectators. Bring a lawn chair as the fields lacked bleachers in 2004.

The team will travel by bus and will be staying Friday night at the Las Vegas Comfort Inn on Paradise Blvd, ($80/room). We will board the bus after the final contest and head home to SLC Saturday night. Players may join parents/friends for the ride home as long as I'm made aware of the arrangement in advance of the trip.

Call (702) 239-2000 for reservations if you wish to stay in the same facility as the Utes. Act fast, rooms on OCT weekends dill up early!
